Planning a Wedding in Koh Samui
If you’re considering a wedding in Thailand, Koh Samui offers so much choice and diversity. As it’s an actual island - unlike Phuket which is attached to the mainland via causeway - Koh Samui has that ‘island feel’ as well as long stretches of beautiful beaches. Samui is perfect for elopements or large wedding groups. It’s not a small island - it would take about 4 hours to drive all the way around the circumference.
Many couples and guests like to hire open top jeeps or scooters and explore the island themselves. You can easily find a quaint little local village or secluded beach to explore and spend the day in.
The island’s location in the Gulf of Thailand means you have an amazing choice of options for sightseeing as well as hens and bucks parties. There are the infamous Full Moon Parties on the neighbouring island of Koh Phangan, or incredible diving in Koh Tao. We’ve arranged many a post-wedding brunch aboard a catamaran sailing the gulf with a DJ, drinks, and food. What better way to spend the first day of your lives together? Sounds perfect!
So let us explain your wedding venue options in a little more detail. There are four main areas to choose from for wedding locations in Koh Samui:
Chaweng Beach
This is the main heart of Koh Samui and where it’s all happening. Chaweng is a really long stretch of sand lined with resorts, bars, and restaurants. To give you an idea of the length, it would take around half an hour to 45 minutes to walk from one end to the other, but the walk would speed by as you pass art galleries, bars, restaurants, markets, and boutique shops.
All the resorts here host weddings, but be aware that if you choose a resort smack bang in the middle of Chaweng, you can expect the beach to be busy. We’ve arranged many weddings in Koh Samui (even our owner, Angela’s, wedding!) and we tend to use the resorts at either end of Chaweng, as the beaches are much quieter and the resorts are still awesome.
Lamai Beach
Located about 20 minutes drive from Chaweng is the little sleepy village of Lamai. It’s much quieter down this way, but you’ll find some great wedding venues. From the funky Beach Republic to the amazing Le Meridien with its incredible 280 meter long Ocean Pier. People come to Lamai if they’re after something a bit quieter for their wedding venue. One thing to note is that the beach is quite rocky, which makes for amazing photography, but should be kept in mind if you plan on a beach wedding.
Baan Taling Ngam
This location is around 45 minutes from Chaweng Beach, and is even quieter than Lamai. Baan Taling Ngam is the side of the island where the sun sets, and makes for incredible photo opportunities. We’ve arranged many weddings at the stunning Intercontinental resort - this resort has some magical locations for both the ceremony and reception, including a sky deck with beautiful ocean views. If you’re after the wow factor you can’t go past this resort or location.
Bo Phut
This area is a 5 minute drive from Chaweng and is a happening little fish village. There’s a large amount of choice for wedding resorts, and plenty to do in the realm of shopping, bars, and restaurants. It’s quite a hip and happening place, and one we use a lot for Koh Samui weddings.
