Want a Destination Wedding but don’t know where to start?

If you are reading this blog, chances are that you have either already decided that a Destination Wedding is for you or you are trying to work out the pro’s and con’s to marrying overseas. Regardless of what stage you are at however, with all the information plastered around the internet, you are undoubtedly beginning to exhibit feelings of overwhelming confusion, fear of the unknown, even mild symptoms of stress and anxiety. For most brides, all of this is quite normal and goes with the territory, regardless of whether you are getting married locally or overseas.

Where a Destination wedding differs to a local wedding and where things can get away from you, is the planning process. Unlike getting married at the local church, Beach or Conference Centre, there are many factors for a bride to consider. Here’s but a few;

Time Zones – Suppliers at your destination may not be available at the times that you are.

Language Barriers – Staff at your venue or professional services on location, may not speak English very well.

Phone Bills – Calling overseas florists, Reception Centres, Photographers and so on, can get extremely expensive.

Unreliable Internet / Email – Many countries do not enjoy fast or reliable access to the web or emails.

Legal Obligations – Many countries do not have consumer laws and services may not follow industry guidelines.

Restrictions – Dealing with a particular Resort or venue may restrict the services and professionals you have access to.

Accountability – Sadly many overseas operators are new to the industry, unskilled or maybe even less than honest.

The list goes on, but inevitably, trying to arrange a wedding from thousands of Kilometres away, with complete strangers who may not always be competent or have your best interests at heart, can get down-right ugly.

In an effort to combat this, some of the larger resorts do now provide an in-house wedding planner, but be very clear. An in-house wedding planner, while representative of the venue, is restricted to the services that the venue is willing or able to provide. Rarely will a venue outsource professional services such as Photographers, Decorators or Entertainers, leaving you with an out of the box package experience that falls behind the level of quality actually available in the area.

Where an in-house wedding planner is useful, is when they are working alongside your own dedicated Australian planner. The local planner will liaise with your Australian planner and be there on the big day with a clear schedule and understanding of what the the day entails, so that you can focus on getting married and enjoying your wedding.  The advantage of this arrangement is that you now have access to a far greater pool of professionals on location, as well as your own local planner, here in Australia.

And "being there and understanding the schedule" can also be said about most of the wedding professionals that you will be hiring, with of course the expectation that they will be there on the day and that they will perform as expected or better.

To neutralise all of this worry and misery, services like Wedding Destinations have been born almost out of necessity. With the explosion in Destination Weddings and monumental task involved in planning any wedding (let alone one overseas), a Wedding Planner and Stylist here in your own country is an absolute no brainer!

Furthermore, having a Destination Wedding Specialists with years of experience, tried and tested procedures as well as trusted professionals on location, gives the bride peace of mind and the assurance that the wedding you have always dreamed, will run smoothly and without any hiccups.

To D.I.Y or Not to D.I.Y

If you are just embarking on planning a Destination Wedding, but are still considering the Pro’s and Con’s of 'Doing it Yourself' vs employing an Australian Planner, we would urge you to test the waters before committing to anything or anyone (the Groom excluded of course).

Go ahead and touch base with some overseas vendors and venues!

Measuring their response times, transparency and overall levels of communication will give you an indication of how they operate at their end. Look closely at what they are offering.

Is it value for money or is just cheap?

Are they working for you or themselves?

Do they listen?

Will they comprehend what you are asking for?

Have your questions been answered?

How are your stress levels and understanding fairing now you have talked?

The Answer is right before your eyes

If what they are offering doesn’t feel right and you suspect for just one moment that it is you who could be the one stressing or running around prior to and on the big day, then the next decision you make towards planning the best day of your life will be a simple one!

Thanks for your on-the-ground insight Daniel.

We too have certainly seen a shift towards Koh Samui, which as you say, is in part due to the increase in Phuket Wedding prices and the Beach Wedding restrictions. There are of course some exceptions and affordable options with Beach access do exist in Phuket, such as the stunning Cape Panwa Resort, on the southern tip of the island.
To explore these options, Brides are always welcome to discuss Phuket or Samui weddings with one of our planners.
Websites such as yours Daniel also offer an invaluable perspective into Thailand Wedding Photography that is certain to promote a keen interest for this gorgeous destination, while inspiring couples already decided upon Thailand to get creative with their event.
Thanks again Daniel and we look forward to seeing more of your stunning work in the future.

Great read!, I knew that the weather was better but didnt know why.. And yes Samui is my winner all around better!.. It the past 10+ years Thailand has been a huge growing market for destination wedding!, Phuket and Koh Samui in particular... Phuket's market being the bigger of the islands with the most venues, suppliers, the best photographer & videographers to choose from. However in the past few years weddings have decreased in Phuket and increased in Koh Samui and a few other Islands. Because Phuket banded its beach weddings and all private beaches are no longer private, huge crowds surrounding the wedding celebrations, oh and not to mention the prices for everything have gone up 30% or more, many people have moved over to Koh Samui to have their wedding, Samui has always been popular for weddings but in general they were smaller more simple weddings. Koh Samui with the growth of the market has really stepped up in quality and it has some of the most stunning wedding venues and locations in the world!, its much more private with amazing sea view, beach front villas and resorts making it the new leader for destination wedding couples around the world!.. Check out my website for more info regarding weddings in Thailand as I am a photographer & videographer who has shot over 300 weddings here http://www.dbaciphotography...
