Tips on personalising your destination wedding

When it comes to adding a touch of your own personality to your destination wedding some couples feel a little overwhelmed. After all, just how do you make your wedding stand apart from another couple who have booked the same package? Couples ask how can we make it look like “our” day and not someone else's? The answer lies in seeing what little touches you can add to the décor. Work closely with your wedding planner to see just how you can elevate the base package and turn it into something truly unique and memorable.

Your colour scheme

As for any wedding, colour is important so check with the venue to see what they can offer in the way of colour to guarantee a cohesive look. Remember that tropical bouquets aren't quite as perfect as they are in Australia, and whilst you may get bold, vibrant colours, they won't necessarily co-ordinate with your theme. If you're opting for a fairly neutral colour scheme, then you can go ahead and embrace your location's charm and simply enjoy what's on offer. Another option is to have a local florist make up you a bouquet of faux flowers and boutonnieres which look just like the real thing. The advantage of these is that if packed well, they will arrive at your destination looking fresh and vibrant no matter how hot it is outside. You can also take them back home with you and use if you're hosting another “home reception”, or have them made into a display which you can see every day.

Here's a few other ideas on adding that certain wow factor to your décor:

Tiffany chairs

Most Caribbean and Mexican 4-5 star resorts have Tiffany or Chiavari chairs available and they can add elegance to a room without a lot of fuss.

Additional centrepieces

Standard resort centre pieces are usually glass cylinder vases filled with submerged flowers or a floating candle and tied round with ribbon. You could add a few more cube vases or shorter vases filled with some colourful blooms and, if you're hosting a beach wedding, why not dangle a starfish from the foliage or set some pillar candles in sand filled vases decorated with small sea shells. Different heights and textures all add interest and look quite different from the standard resort centre pieces.

Take your linens with you

Whilst you can often rent linens and chair covers at resorts they aren't always affordable. Why not think ahead to get just the finishing touch you're looking for? Stylish overlays can provide all the colour you want and custom Tiffany chair covers can add that finishing touch, whether it be fun, colourful, or elegant. What's more linens pack up easily to take in a suitcase.

Fun but practical

Finally, don't forget to include fun items which can also be useful in extreme heat, such as colourful hand fans or parasols for the ladies. Giving all of your guests these items provides more colour throughout the group, and extra comfort on a hot day. You could also use fans as an alternative for your bridesmaids to carry.
